the green house, although now privately owned, remains true to its roots by donating a percentage of profits annually to local conservation groups and providing day to day support for conservation and social justice groups including wildlife rescue, amnesty international, the wilderness society and the australian conservation foundation. giving is a natural part of life and we aim to make it a pleasure by offering friendly service and advice, affordable quality products and in doing so make your spending a little greener.
running a " green" retail business is a juggling exercise. but after you accept that people will and do buy gifts , there arises the opportunity to provide an alternative to "mainstream" shopping and to promote ethical and/ or positive products, support creativity and in our case - capture a percentage of the profits made by selling these goods and donating to worthy local groups. we try to keep wastage to a minimum, to recycle or re-use the mountain of packaging that goes with merchandise, to do things in a humble way and encourage customers to do likewise. we have no plastic shop bags other than what customers recycled to us, our paper bags are hand-stamped recycled brown paper, the till doesn't issue receipts (we handwrite these when requested), most of our displays come from opp shops and we re-use single sided invoices etc for in house printing. the air-con is unfortunately unavoidable in summer but for over half the year we get away with leaving the doors open. with plenty of natural light we use just a few fluoros and energy efficient bulbs. doing things this way has resulted in a very individual ( possibly eccentric ) space but everyone seems to enjoy what we do and how we do it. in fact " I love this shop" is our most overheard customer remark - and thankfully after 21 years we love it too!
