The Green House Story

The Green House began its life in Kuranda in 1992 as an initiative of the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC) - the North's peak conservation group. We moved down the mountain to our present location in Cairns in 2004. Although now privately owned we bow to our green roots by donating a percentage of profits annually to local conservation groups and providing day to day support for conservation and social justice groups including Wildlife Rescue, Amnesty, the Wilderness Society and the Australian Conservation Fund.

A "green" retail business is a juggling exercise, but after you accept that people will, and do, buy gifts there arises the opportunity to provide an alternative to mainstream shopping and to promote ethical and positive products, support creativity and, in our case, - capture a percentage of the profits made by selling these goods and supporting the work of worthy local groups.
